Assignment #8 - Persecution

You have all been working diligently on your novel study assignments.  All of the novels show the trials and tribulations of a character and how he/she was treated unfairly.  Now that you have a better idea of what persecution is, I would like you to write about the type of persecution that occurred in your novel.  In your paragraph, make sure you explain the following:

1.)  What type of persecution occurred?
2.)  Who was affected and how was this person affected?
3.)  Who persecuted this person and why?
4.)  Why do you think this type of persecution was allowed to happen?
5.)  If you could change what happened, what would you change and why?
6.)  How did it make you feel?  Explain in detail.

*** Remember, these are just guidelines for your paragraph.  Don't forget to provide good support/examples/evidence for your points. ***
*** I fully expect you to write using proper spelling, grammar, capitals, sentence structure, etc. ***

  2. THE DEVILS ARITHMETIC
In the Devils Arithmetic there's a lot of those of persecution. Like slavery, a lot of the Jewish people held camps for people to work and work. There was also Racism, Hitler said he would kill all of the Jews that was blue eyed. I was very sad and mad when I started reading this book, Hitler didn't deserve to be leader of the country. The Nazis were also mean in this book. I wish every country was a free country, like Canada, you can't make people do stuff when they don't want to (I'm talking about non free country's). It's just sad what they had to do in these days. Hitler was killing them for no reason just because he hated them doesn't mean he has to kill them..

  3. "The Devil's Arithmetic" displayed many forms of persecution such as slavery and racism. Adolf hitler was a cruel, hateful and twisted man who somehow found his way to power. This earned power was not used for good, but instead for an immense amount of evil that words cannot describe. He hated Jewish people, Hitler tried to rid the world of them, tried to rid the world of innocent people like Hannah and her family. He formed an army and the Nazis killed any man, woman or child of the Jewish race that they managed to find. How one man could have so much hate towards a race of people who did nothing to him is beyond me and how he brainwashed so many Germans to share that hate is incomprehensible . It makes me angry when I think about what he did, it makes me incredibly sad because so many died before their time. But more than anything I feel ashamed that we as people, as the human race stood by and watch this horrible act of hatred unfold right before our eyes and did nothing about it. I wish that I could go back in time and let people know of the horrific things Hitler would do with his power. Maybe it would only save the lives of a few like Hannah who were killed in concentration camps in giant “human ovens” filled with poisonous gas, a way nobody deserves to die, except maybe the man who killed so many others using this terrible method. Or maybe it would save an entire race from almost being extinct. We will never know now, but I do know one thing...Hitler never should have ruled. So let’s make sure nothing like this happens again because you can’t blame one race for the entire world’s problems, as The horrific Adolph Hitler did.

  4. In the novel the 'Devils Arithmetic' a form of persecution I saw was discrimination and slavery. An example was when the Nazi soldiers put all the Jewish people in concentration camps. In there, they were forced to work and barely had any food or water. Can yo believe that one person cause all this? Well I cant but it is true! When Hitler was in power, he brainwashed people into believing in him and made them do horrible things. But there were people out there who risked their and their families lives because they were hiding a Jew. As for in the concentration camps, they had to work so much that you could see people laying on the grounds tired. But do you know what is the saddest part? None of the other countries in the world knew about what the Germans did to the Jewish people! Only in the times during World War 2, the other countries realized how much pain the Jewish people took because of the Germans.

  5. In this novel 'The Devil's Arithmetic', there was 2 types of persecution: slavery, and racism. There was slavery and racism because the Nazis had put the Jewish people in a concentration camp, forced to work so hard they would collapse from being exhausted, and were forced to do this, all because they were Jews. Hitler had tried to kill all Jews, and made everyone else agree with him, like he was brainwashing them. Some people had hid friends that were Jews in their houses, risking their own lives, for their loved ones. But because most people were brainwashed by Hitler and the Nazi soldiers, they thought what he was doing was right, and had done horrible things too. This makes me feel sad, and disappointed. Sad, because of all the innocent people that had to die because of this, and disappointed, because I can't believe someone would actually do such a thing, to such innocent people that meant no harm.

    1. Hello Chelsea! I read over your paragraph and I though you did amazing! But I noticed a few things you could fix for next time, such as in the third line you forgot to space after a comma. The last part of the fourth sentence, didn't make a lot of sense. Another thing I noticed was your sentences run on, and on. Think back to that worksheet we did in class not too long ago called, "Stop Those Run-On's!" I think it would be of much use to you. But other than that stuff, you did great! :)

I think you did a good job but I have a few edits for you. To begin, when you said The Devils Arithmetic the T, D, and A should be capitilized it should also be put in quotation marks. When you said Jews the J should have been capitilized. Another edit I have is, a lot is to words not one word. The first time you said Hitler you did not capitilize the H. Lastly, you did not put a period at the end of your last sentence. Good job though.

  7. In the book " The Devil's Arithmetic, " there was 3 types of persecution, bullying, slavery, and racism. All of the people of the Jewish religion was effected by this. It affected them because they had to work until they starved, they were beat up for no reason, and all of this happened because they were Jewish! Hitler was the one who told everyone that the Jewish people are bad, because he was thinking that they were some sort of a threat, WHICH MAKES NO SENSE! But I have no idea why they let it happen, maybe it was because they were brainwashed, maybe they didn't know what they actually did to the people. But if I would change the one scene of the book, it would be when Hannah goes back into time. Instead of just Hannah going back, I would send Aaron back to, why? Well, if Aaron and Hannah couldn't find each other at one part, it would really want me to read more. The book in general made me feel really sad. It made me really sad because this is based on what Hitler actually did, and it makes no sense to do such a thing.

    1. Excellent job Greg! I only saw little errors like how you wrote "to" when it was supposed to be "too." Another mistake I found was the last couple sentences of the book. I think you were supposed to change the persecution that happened, not a scene in the book. Changing the scene in the book belongs to blog assignment #7.

  8. I thought that your post was pretty good. Although you did have a few punctuation errors such as how you didn't put spaces after period or added an unnecessary comma. You also capitalized the word forms in your first sentence. The last easy fix is to fix your spelling of discrimination. Overall great job describing the persecution.

  10. In the book there was all types of persecutions and three of them were bullying and slavery and racism. and all of the jewish people were effected by these types of persicutions and it wasnt fair because if people were treated like this today society would be diffrent because it is not fair. also when people are treated like this then it will effect the people who did it later on. in the book the people aka the jewish people were starved and beatin up and all of this was happend because of hitler. Also if i could send someone back it would be aron and not hannah because if hannah went back then she wouldnt of goten introuble but aron would be carful.

It would be diffrent because if we all had one man telling us who is bad and who is good and all of the people who are bad are the ones that we couldnt talk to or help. well that isnt fair at all because people should be treated fairly then the wourld then and now would be better but now a days is better then back then.

In the book "The Devil's Arithmetic" There was 3 types of persecution: Bullying, slavery, and racism. When Hitler came into rule it effected everybody who believed in the Jewish religion. One way on how it effected them was the slavery they made the Jews work until they died, they were beaten over and over again. Even though they were beaten no one knew the answer why was it because their leader hated them or did they do something wrong that they needed to be punished. Hitler brained washed everybody to think they were bad and that he said that the Jews were a threat to "The Father Land". But it was a lie Hitler was a threat to the land he was the one who was bad not the jews he was the one who was brainwashing his country! I do not know why the people believed he was their hero!! Although it was a good book I wish Aaron went with her because it would have made the book a lot more interesting and would make me want to read it more. The book made me feel really sad because it was based on the things that Hitler did in the past.

  12. A type of persecution that occurred in the book Devils Arithmetic is when Hannah and others were in a small cart squished with no washroom, food or water to drink, however, the people that got affected by this is random people and Hannah. They were affected because they didn't have any food, water or even a washroom. The people who persecuted these people including Hannah were the Nazis. Why did they persecute these people you may ask? Well, they persecuted these people because the people were Jewish and didn't like them. However, this type is allowed because that is basically what the book is about. If i could change anything of what happened, I would change it into this... The opposite of the whole scene. This made me feel allot happier because the Jewish people were safe and the Nazis were not.( Payback for what they have done to all the Jewish people)

  14. Great post! I enjoyed reading your point of view on the subject. I like how you put in the definition of "discrimination" because some people may not have known what it meant. One comment I would make was you said "Hitler brainwashed the people of Germany into thinking that Jewish people were bad" but that wasn't entirely true because not ALL the Germans were brainwashed MOST were. Other than that one thing amazing job! keep up the great work! :)

  15. REVISED:
In the novel, “The Devils Arithmetic” I found two types of persecution, discrimination, and slavery. According to Dictionary. com, discrimination means “treatment or consideration of, or making a distinction in favor of or against, a person or thing based on the group, class, or category to which that person or thing belongs rather than on individual merit: racial and religious intolerance and discrimination.” Hitler had one goal and that was to eliminate all the Jewish people in the world, because of their religion. Hitler brainwashed most of the people of Germany into thinking that Jewish people were bad. So many people thought it was okay, and supported Hitler or sat back and did nothing. Then Hitler made Nazis tear apart Jewish families by either killing them, or sending them away to concentration camps. In the concentration camps, the Jews slaved away until they dropped dead, or were sent into gas chambers. In my opinion, any type of discrimination, is wrong, and if I could change what happened, I would undo everything Hitler did. What Hitler did was vile and disgusting! Why would anyone do such a thing? Reading this Holocaust book made me really sad, and angry and frustrated at Hitler and some Germans.

  16. In the book devils arithmetics the form of persecution that I found was slavery, for when the Jews were locked up by the Nazi soldiers and work hard like oxens all day, Hitler was the leader and the one in charge for the camps, this type of persecution probably happened because everyone was brain washed and they thought that Hitler was the nice person. This made me feel sad and just heart broken for what Hitler did because if I was the one getting persecuted like that I would not have taken it well. I wish I could change how Hitler acted and make him kind and nice that way millions of brave soldiers wouldn't have died trying to protect the father lands.

  19. (REVISED)

I saw many forms of persecution in the book "The Devil's Arithmetic". An example was slavery. As you may know, the Nazi soldiers would send Jewish people to concentration camps, where they would work for hours wearing torn clothes and having little food. Although the Nazi soldiers did this, keep in mind Adolf Hitler ordered them to do it. Adolf Hitler hated the Jewish people because of his childhood. When Hitler was a boy, his mother died in the hospital. The nurse treating her was Jewish, and even though it wasn't her fault, Hitler blamed her for the rest of his life. Also, when Hitler moved to Vienna, the mayor was an anti-semite(A person who hated the Jewish) and Hitler looked up to him as a role model. If I could, I would choose to get rid of all the bad things that happened during the Holocaust so the Jewish people would not suffer such a terrible chapter in history. All of this made me feel very sad and angry about all that had happened during the Holocaust. I felt sad because of all of the Jewish people that had to die, and I also feel angry because of how the Nazi's were very cruel to them. I just wish something like this will never happen again.

    1. ok i really like your paragraph and i love how you put the information about hitler in there like it was really good and one thing that you could do for the next time is maybe put the information at the bottom of your paragraph that would make it look good and also it would keep the readers into the paragraph that you were acctually writting about other wise great job i am very impressed

  20. There were lots of types of persecution I saw in this book one example is that the prisoners were allowed to slap Jewish people and take their things the only reason this was probably allowed to happen is because the Nazis were so racist and because they were bigger.
I would change this so if any violence as caught then the person fighting or slapping would get more work this made me feel angry because people are letting this happen and sad this happened because its not fair what so ever.
