Assignment #6 - Emotions

The very definition of persecution is to be treated unfairly or unjustly.  Your novel evoked many different emotions throughout the different chapters.

1.) Choose one scene from the novel that clearly shows a form of persecution
2.) Explain which emotion(s) it evoked.
3.) Also, explain how it made you feel.

***You should respond in paragraph form following the criteria outlined in class.***

  1. A part that I thought was a form of persecution was when most of the people in the polish village were all sent to the concentration camp while they were all jamed together in two different trains. I thought it was very unfair when they had to stand in a train that had been going for 5 days. There were no windows or really anywhere to get fresh air and no nutrition like food or water. I felt sad inside becuase of that. It made me feel sad inside becuase of how they were jamed together in that train for 5 straight days.

    1. I thought that you had a great paragraph. A couple things you could fix are spelling mistakes and capitalization errors. There is only one spelling mistake and one capitalization error, though. You could also explain a bit more on why you were sad.

      Spelling: jamed (jammed)

      Capitals: polish (Polish)

  2. A form of persecution I saw in the book, was how the German prisoner was allowed to slap the Jewish people in the concentration camp. The emotions that were evoked, were probably sadness, and maybe anger. While I read that part of the book, I was definitely sad, and angry.

  3. A place in the story where persecution in shown is some where between the beginning and middle of the book. What happens is, while the family of the soon to be married couple are walking to the brides village, they are stopped by nazi soldiers. The soldiers take all the people to a trian station in large trucks. At the station they are forced to lay on the ground, being beaten and given no food simply because of the fact they are Jewish. Then they are stuffed into cramped boxcars for days deprived of food, water or a place to relieve themselves. This part of the story evoked the emotions of sadness, anger, frustration, and self pitty. While reading this part I felt extreamly sad for the prisioners of the train, and even more so I felt angry, because I dont understand how someone could treat another human being so cruely simply because of their religion.

  4. The one scene I chose in the book that showed persecution was when Hannah and a whole bunch of other people was forced to be squished in one cart, going somewhere they do not know, with no food, water, or washroom! The Nazis just put them there and left them to dry! It made me feel sad and angry. Why you ask? It made me sad because they were being tortured for no reason, it makes no sense to just take people from a certain religion and punish them! It made me angry because WHY WOULD THEY EVEN DO THAT? It kills me to see what horrible things people have done to other people.

You had a grammar issue. For example, for the first sentence, you need to change 'was' to 'were' ( "The one scene I chose in the book that showed persecution was when Hannah and a whole bunch of other people 'WERE' forced to be squished in one cart, going somewhere they do not know, with no food, water, or washroom! ") . Over all, WELL DONE!

  6. A part in the story, were I saw persecution is were Hannah and other people had to get into one shopping cart, they had nothing to do, they coulnt go to the washroom, eat food, drink water. I felt really sad when it said in the book that the Nazis did that. What this book made me feel is sad, mad (Nazis for being mean to people). Its horrible what they do to people other people.

Good job, but I have a few edits you could probably make. To start You need to capitalize all of the I's and you need to capitalize the first word of a sentence you also did not capitalize Nazi. Another word you need to capitalize is Jewish. You spelled persecution like percution and you spelled Nazi like nazies. You also said mad instead of made. Good Job though.

One scene that i chose in the book that showed persecution is when the nazis forced hannah and i think friends and other people to get in a small and squishy cart with no food or washroom. my emotion to this is sad... terribly sad because i cant believe how the Nazis hVE THE GUTTS TO DUMP PEOPLE IN A SMALL SQUISHY cart. I dont think the people knew where they were goin so i am guessing that they were shocked. Why do tha Nazis do this to these people?

    1. Your post was very good and showed how you felt. There are a few things that you do need to fix though:
      1) I think that you accidentally hit the caps lock when you were meaning to put "a" in have.
      2) Capitalize your "I's" and also capitalize names.
      3) You also shortened a few words like you were texting so you should fix that.
      Overall great job.

  9. A part in the novel, "The Devils Arithmetic" where I clearly saw persecution was in chapter 10 and 11. In these two chapters Hannah, Gitl, and many other Jewish people were forced to leave all the belongings that had with them behind, and then they got crammed into a train cart. They were forced to stand there cramped against each other, starving, cold, and dirty from their own wastes. They were in the train for 4 days, and during that time, a few people died. Some emotions I felt when I read this were anger, and sadness. I felt anger towards the Nazis because, how cold anyone be so cruel to treat anyone like that? I’m even angrier about it because all the Jews on the train had done nothing wrong. I felt sadness because young children on the train had to suffer the 4 days of hunger and cold. If I were those kids, I’d be traumatized. Also, some of the children died from the cold, along with some adults.

Great job Ammit! I liked how you followed the instructions and everything was well written. I would suggest that you add more transition words to make your writing more smoothly. Also, I saw some errors like how you forgot to add a word (line 3 Add "they"). All in all, I think it's safe to say that you did amazing!

    1. Hello Minnie Mouse! Your response is very good; although there are a few things you could work on. A thing you could try to work on is capitals at the start of sentences, and proper nouns. Another thing I noticed was you put a period, and then “and”. Try and replace “and” with a transition word. Overall, good work! :D

  11. One scene from the book that clearly showed a form of persecution was when the Jews were chosen for death because, they cannot work properly. This made me feel angry and sad. Do you know why? Well because, killing people just because they cannot work is not a humanly thing to do! I mean, who could work everyday without resting?

    1. Hello Conan! I read over your paragraph and I though it was great! Although, I did see some things to work on for next time such as the comma after both "because"s were not needed. Also, you could change sad to a better word, such as depressed. Another thing I noticed was you should change humanly, to humane. All in all, I thought it was great! :)

  12. One part of the story that showed what persecution was like back then was how Rivka was explaining why not to be around the Greece Jews. She said that they don't last very long because they don't speak Yiddish or German so they can't easily understand the Nazis. I find that unfair and a little bit disappointing because just because they don't understand the language the Nazis will kill them since they don't work. I think that if it wasn't unfair like that the Nazis would explain but I think that they wouldn't do that because they would think it wastes time.

  14. A part in the book where I saw a type of persecution was when Hannah and her friends were forced to go into the small cart. They had no bathrooms, no food and no water. This made me feel sad because who would like to be in a cart which is crammed with people? For me, it is almost imposible to stay without food or water. That is why I think it is unfair that they all had to stay in that tiny cart with barely anything.

A part in the book were it showed persecution was were hannah was in the consintration camp and there were these three boys who were accused of trying to sneak out of the camp but it was hannah. So those boys were lined up facing the wall and the nazi souliders shot them that part made me feel mad sad and angry because why would someone want to shoot a person who is inisent. I know that the nazis were brainwashed but that part made me sad mad and all emotions except for like the happy ones.

    1. Good job Mary Poppins! Although, it would be nice if you fixed small errors like capitals, for example "hannah" should be "Hannah". Also, you should fix spelling errors like "souliders" which is supposed to be "soldiers". When your finished, you may want to add more transition words. But overall, nice job!

  17. In one scene of the book the German prisoner is given rights to slap the jewish just because he is a German. This is a form of persecution and i don't think that a rank should let you persecute the lower ranked, in fact it is not right at all for them to be persecuting the jewish and it just not right! when I came across this it made me sad to realized how the jewish go persecuted for being themselves... then it made my angry to know that some people out there want to hurt for the fun of it when they get the chance...
